Out of all the 15 state-run sugar mills, only one mill is running in profit, else all are in losses, said Bangladesh’s industry minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun on Sunday, reports Dhaka Tribune.
Replying to the question raised by Bhola 2 lawmaker Ali Azam in Parliament, he said only Carew and Co, a mill owned by the government, is profitable.
“Six sugar mills have suspended sugarcane crushing as they incurred huge losses. These mills located in Pabna, Setabganj, Panchagarh, Rangpur, Shyampur, and Kushtia have stopped operations since December 2020,” Humayun further added.
