Uganda’s sugar export earnings improved

After suffering rejection from all the neighbouring countries due to trade wars, Uganda has managed to recover sugar export to a level it was two years ago.

The country exported around $12.94 million (Shs45.9b) sugar in April, as against $7.89 million 9Shs28b) in March, states the Bank of Uganda (BoU).

The BoU report shows that Uganda exported a total of 23,185 metric tonnes up from 13,719 tonnes exported in March.

Mr. Jim Kabeho, the chairman Uganda Sugar Manufacturers Association said, “The increase in sugar export is attributed to the exporting of 25,000 metric tonnes to Tanzania.”

Tanzania in 2020 had imported about 20,000 metric tonnes of sugar from Uganda and later, the country abandoned the deal and requested through the East African gazette to import sugar from Comesa.

The trade war resulted in Tanzania and Kenya rejecting Uganda’s sugar on claims that the dealers were importing cheap sugar and re-exporting cheap sugar into their markets.

The situation was revived after the trade experts and government officials from Kenya visited Uganda to resolve the deadlock that arose due to the trade war.
