SUMMARY
- Compressed biogas (CBG) is being considered a gamechanger for India’s energy transition. With a wide range of applications across the industry, household and transport domains, the CBG sector holds tremendous potential to meet India’s climate goals, reduce energy imports and support the rural economy. As such, the sector has received significant interest from all key stakeholders.
- A key policy fillip to the sector came with the SATAT scheme, which had targeted the establishment of 5,000 CBG plants by 2025. However, progress has been slower than anticipated, and only 80 CBG plants are operational and 72 under construction as of December 2024. Other key policy initiatives launched to support the sector include the CBG-CGD Synchronisation Scheme, the National Bioenergy Programme and the Gobardhan scheme. Further, the government has announced funding for the development of pipeline infrastructure, enabling pipeline connectivity for 100 CBG projects. Moreover, blending obligations have been announced till 2028-29.
- Bolstered by these policy initiatives, developers are announcing long-term plans and investing in projects involving different feedstocks. Further, several startups have emerged that cater to feedstock supply chain management, CBG production and ancillary technologies. Going forward, with mature technologies, reduced costs and policy tweaks, the full potential of CBG can be realised to support India’s net zero goals.
The mission of the conference is to provide a platform to discuss policy initiatives, technological advancements, innovative business models and strategies, investment opportunities and plans of the industry, and cost and finance trends in the CBG sector. By bringing together policymakers, developers, technology providers and manufacturers, utilities, consultants, financing organisations and environmental agencies across the value chain, we seek to address legacy issues, share best practices and chart a roadmap for the sector.
