Pakistan: Government orders strict monitoring of sugar inventory at mills

ederal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain on Monday said the government will place strict checks on sugar mill inventories, with officials to be posted at each mill to monitor stock levels and ensure smooth supply as per agreed arrangements, reported local media.

The minister was chairing a key meeting with representatives of the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) and other stakeholders from across the country to review the current sugar supply situation, according to an official statement.

Rana Tanveer emphasized that the government is determined to keep sugar prices stable and ensure a steady supply in the market. “Any lapses or violations of the agreed terms will not be allowed,” he said, while also assuring that the government is ready to cooperate with the industry in resolving genuine problems without delay.

During the meeting, it was noted that some sugar mills are not following the agreed plan for releasing sugar stocks. Despite multiple assurances, delays in the dispatch and market availability of sugar continue to be reported.

The PSMA Chairman highlighted the difficulties faced by mill owners. In response, the minister assured that all valid concerns would be addressed and directed the formation of a Grievance Redressal Committee for smoother coordination.

To further improve communication, a dedicated WhatsApp group will also be created, allowing real-time interaction between government officials and sugar mill representatives.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining transparency in sugar stock management, stabilizing prices, and working closely with all parties to protect the interests of both consumers and producers.
