9 new sugar mills established in Karnataka and 7 in Maharashtra in last 5 years: Centre

India’s sugar industry has experienced growth over the last five years, with 22 new sugar mills being set up across five major states.

Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya, the Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, shared this update in the Lok Sabha while responding to questions about regarding the number of sugar mills in the country has increased over the past five years.

She mentioned, “During last five years i.e. from sugar season 2020-21, total 22 nos. of new sugar mills have been established in the country.”

Karnataka has taken the lead, adding nine new mills to its operations in the past five years. The establishment of these modern mills is expected to boost local employment and strengthen rural economies, further solidifying Karnataka’s position in India’s sugar industry.

Maharashtra has seen the addition of seven new mills during this period, while Madhya Pradesh has welcomed four. Uttar Pradesh, the largest sugar-producing state in India, has added one more mill to its already large network.

Telangana, which has been focused on revitalizing its sugar sector, also saw the launch of a new mill. This move is part of broader efforts to revive agro-based industries and enhance farmer welfare in the region.
