Sugar mills face shortage of cane for crushing

Shamali: Sugar mills in the district are facing the problem of sugarcane shortage for crushing. According to the media report, Thanabhavan and Unn sugar mills will be closing their operations soon due to the non-availability of sugarcane. Shamli sugar mill will also close operations on May 7 owing to the same issue.

The ongoing cane crushing season began on November 1 in the district. All the mills except Shamali completed their crushing in 6 months as the crushing season began earlier.

According to the news report published in Amarujala.com, Anil Ahalawat, chief manager of the Unn sugar mill said that the crushing capacity of the mill is 70,000 quintal but the mill is now receiving only 35,000 quintal cane daily.

Thanabhavan sugar mill unit head Virpal Singh said that the crushing capacity of the mill is 90,000 quintal but the mill is receiving only 55,000 quintal cane.
