WTO ruling won’t impact Indian sugar export

New Delhi: Despite the WTO ruling that India has flouted the export subsidy rules, the country could export around 6 million tonnes of sugar this season.

As per a news report published by Reuters, Prakash Naiknavare, managing director of the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Ltd said, “Indian sugar mills are already contracted to export 3.5 million tonnes of sugar this year and could ultimately export more than 6 million tonnes.”

Abinash Verma, director, Indian Sugar Mills Association said, “The ruling won’t impact sugar exports as there is no export subsidy as of now.”

In an official release, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said that India has initiated all measures necessary to protect its interest and file an appeal at the WTO against the report, to protect the interests of its farmers.

“It may be noted that in 2019, Australia, Brazil and Guatemala had challenged some of India’s policy measures in the sugar sector, at the WTO. They had wrongly claimed that domestic support provided by India to sugarcane producers is in excess of the limit allowed by the WTO and that India provides prohibited export subsidies to sugar mills,” it noted.
