Kenya: New sugar mill to come up in Siaya

A private sugar firm is awaiting approval from the environmental watchdog in Kenya to get the nod to construct a new sugar factory in Siaya County.

Officials from Seal Sugar Mill have stated that they are waiting for approval from the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) to construct a factory in the Alego Uonga sub-county, the region suitable for sugarcane production.

This will boost the economic activities in the region as it will be the first project in five years after closing the rice farm dominion in Siaya.
In 2017, a Kisumu businessman and owner of Foam Mattresses Limited announced the plans to build an Sh940 million sugar factory in Siaya County.

According to a regulatory filing submitted by the Seal Sugar Mill, the new factory will cover 18,400 acres of land and would generate 1200 jobs.
Initially, the sugar mill will operate with a milling capacity of 1250 tonnes of cane per day (TCD) which would be expanded to 2,500 tonnes of cane per day in the future.
