Goa: Sanjivani sugar mill awaits revival

Ponda: Sanjivani sugar mill, the only mill in the state, has stopped crushing cane for almost three years due to crop shortage and mechanical problems and yet there is no official confirmation of its revival.

Sugarcane farmers, labourers, transport contractors and other workers are affected due to the closure of the sugar mill.

Sanjivani sugar mill used to procure cane from various parts of Karnataka including Khanapur, Alnavar, Dandeli and Haliyal as the cane produced in the state was not sufficient to operate. The mill however closed its operations as it was incurring losses.

The government is working on a model to convert the sugar mill into an ethanol production unit to make it into a profitable venture. The government has set up a committee to review the factory’s work under the leadership of former South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar.

As per HeraldGoa, Sawaikar said, “We have prepared a report regarding the procedure to start an Ethanol project and it would be submitted to the government soon.”
