Pending dues: Sugarcane farmers gherao government officials

Sangrur: Sugarcane farmers agitating for pending cane dues of Rs 9 crore gheraoed the government officials in Dhuri, reports The Tribune.

As per the media report, the farmers also did not allow the administration from conducting an auction of the Dhuri sugar mill to recover dues.

Harjeet Singh Bugra, chairman of the Sugarcane Growers’ Struggle Committee, said, “We have launched an indefinite protest and two of our members climbed on the chimney of the mill. We also gheraoed Tehsildar, Naib Tehsildar, Kanungo and Excise Taxation Officer (ETO) and another officer in the mill and allowed them to leave in the evening after the administration assured quick action.”

“Since today no bidder came for the auction, we have deferred it,” Dhuri SDM Amit Gupta.
