Perambalur Sugar Mills starts cane crushing operations

Sugarcane crushing at the Perambalur Sugar Mills at Eraiyur began on Thursday, reports The Hindu.

The mill is expected to produce 3.51 lakh quintals of sugar during this season. Cane grown over 12,000 acres by 3,933 farmers has been registered with the mill for the ongoing season.

The formal inauguration of the crushing season was done by S. Sivasankar, Minister for Transport and government officials as well as local representatives were present during the programme.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Sivasankar said, “The sugar mill was set up in 1978 by then Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. Last year, the mill had produced 2.98 lakh quintals of sugar and 13,607 tonnes of molasses. This season, cane grown over 2000 acres of land has been registered with the mill and the cane production is expected to touch 3.60 lakh tonnes.”
