Sugar prices in Kenya up as mills close operations

Domestic markets in the country are facing a shortage of sugar as the mills are not getting mature cane for crushing which has resulted in the rising prices of the sweetener.

The sugar is available in the supermarkets at the cheapest rate of Sh409 per two kg to the highest rate of Sh500. Sugar mills in the country were forced to stop operations last month due to a shortage of cane.

The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) had requested the millers in Western Kenya on July 13 to suspend cane harvesting as the crops are not matured yet.

At present, Sony Sugar, Sukari, and Transmara, mills in the Southern Sugar Belt are operating in the country.
