The Sugarcane Farmers Association of Ghana is calling on Trade, Agribusiness and Industry Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare to take immediate and concrete steps to revive the dormant Komenda Sugar Factory, reports 3News.
In a statement released on May 4, the Association criticized the Ministry’s recent response to their concerns, describing it as “unconvincing” and lacking a sense of urgency. They expressed disappointment that, two months after the Minister’s visit to the factory in February, no visible progress has been made. The factory was also not mentioned in the 2025 national budget.
“We campaigned and voted for John Mahama because we believed he could revive this factory to improve our livelihoods,” the statement said, warning the current administration not to repeat what they described as the inaction of the previous NPP government, which failed to get the factory running despite repeated promises.
The Association is demanding the immediate formation of a board of directors to oversee the factory’s operations. They stressed that the board should include competent professionals and at least one representative from the farming community. “We are ready to feed the factory with sugarcane. All we need is government commitment,” they said.
Speaking on Yɛn Nsempa, a morning show on Onua FM, the Association’s Secretary, Nana Joshua Kingsley Mensah, expressed the frustration felt by farmers. “We feel deceived. After the Minister’s visit in February, we expected action. But there’s nothing happening on the ground,” he said.
Nana Joshua emphasized that the livelihoods of hundreds of farmers depend on the factory’s revival. He also called for farmers to be included in key decisions. “We are not just suppliers—we are stakeholders. Our representation on the factory board is non-negotiable.”
The Association reminded President Mahama of his public pledge to turn the Central Region into a major hub for sugar production. “Time is ticking,” Nana Joshua warned. “If care is not taken, the four-year mandate will end with the factory still lying idle.”
