Tra Vinh: The Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh has officially sent its first shipment of 5-star OCOP-rated organic coconut sugar to the United States, marking a significant milestone for the region’s agricultural exports. Weighing over seven tonnes, the shipment comes from Sokfarm, a local enterprise specialising in high-quality coconut-based products, reports Vietnam +.
According to Pham Dinh Ngai, CEO of Sokfarm (Tra Vinh FARM Co., Ltd), the sugar is made from fresh coconut flower nectar. Producing just one kilogram of the sugar requires over eight litres of nectar, which is processed using a low-temperature technique (55–60°C) over several hours. This method helps retain the nectar’s natural minerals and nutrients.”This shipment is headed to partners in the US health food market, where the coconut sugar will be used in products like energy bars and baked goods aimed at health-conscious consumers,” Ngai said.
Established in 2019, Sokfarm currently offers six main products derived from coconut nectar and sugar, all certified under Vietnam’s One Commune One Product (OCOP) programme, with ratings of four or five stars. The company operates a 20-hectare organic coconut farm, certified to meet organic standards in the US, EU, Japan, and Canada. Sokfarm also partners with 35 local farming households in Tieu Can district to source additional raw nectar.
Sokfarm’s products are already present in Japan, the Netherlands, Germany, the US, and Australia, reflecting its growing international footprint. Tra Vinh province currently has 393 OCOP-certified products, including three 5-star and 46 4-star items. Local officials report that after receiving OCOP certification, annual production and revenue for 4- and 5-star products have increased by 20–52% and 30–60%, respectively.
