Pakistani consumers hit hard as sugar prices climb higher

Pakistani consumers faced another blow as sugar prices increased, reaching as high as (PKR) Rs 185 per kilogram in parts of northwestern Pakistan.

According to the latest figures from the Federal Bureau of Statistics, the national average sugar price has increased by Rs 3.38 per kilogram over the past week, now standing at Rs 175.19 per kg compared to Rs 171.81 the previous week.

Peshawar has been the most affected, with residents there paying the highest price of Rs 185 per kilogram. In just one week, sugar prices in the city rose by Rs 5 per kg, deepening the economic burden on households already grappling with inflation.

On a year-on-year basis, the increase is even more significant. In May 2024, the average sugar price was Rs 143.75 per kilogram, marking a rise of more than Rs 31 per kg over the past year.

This sharp rise in sugar prices has sparked concern among both consumers and market analysts. Many fear that sustained inflation in basic commodities could further affect the finances of low- and middle-income families.

As per the media report, economic experts are urging the government to probe the reasons behind the ongoing price surge and implement prompt measures to stabilize the market.
