The southwest monsoon is expected to make its onset over Kerala within the next four to five days, ahead of its normal onset date of June 1, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday.
If it arrives as predicted, it would mark the earliest onset over the Indian mainland since 2009, when the monsoon set in on May 23, as per IMD records. Earlier this month, the department had projected a likely onset around May 27.

“The conditions are also likely to become favourable for further advance of southwest Monsoon over some more parts of South Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Maldives and Comorin area; some parts of Lakshadweep area, Kerala, Tamil Nadu; some more parts South & Central Bay of Bengal, Northeast Bay of Bengal and some parts of Northeastern states during the same period,” the IMD added.
IMD informed that the conditions are likely to become favourable for Monsoon onset over Kerala during next 4-5 days.
The early arrival could have a notable impact on agricultural planning and water resource management across the country.
