Benchmark stock indices recovered from a steep decline earlier in the day to end slightly lower on Monday.
Sensex ended 77.26 points lower at 81,373.75, whereas Nifty concluded 34.10 points down at 24,716.60.
Despite the broader market weakness, a few stocks from the Sensex 30 managed to defy the downtrend and finish in the green. Notable gainers included Adani Ports, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), NTPC, PowerGrid, Nestle India, and Bajaj Finserv.
However, losses in major IT and banking stocks weighed on the indices. Among the top laggards were Tech Mahindra, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Titan, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Infosys.
In the previous season, Sensex ended 182.01 points lower at 81,451.01, whereas Nifty concluded 82.90 points down at 24,750.70.
