The Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare has released progress of area coverage under kharif crops as on 13th June, 2024.
Sugarcane, a vital cash crop, has registered an area coverage of 55.07 lakh hectares till June 13. According to the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare data, this marks a slight increase of around 0.20 lakh hectares over the corresponding period last year, when 54.88 lakh hectares area had been sown.
The sugar industry has already expressed an optimistic outlook for the upcoming 2025–26 Sugar Season.
Sugarcane planting has improved in key producing states like Maharashtra and Karnataka, supported by favorable weather conditions and last year’s monsoon season enhanced cane planting, setting the stage for an on-time start of the crushing season in October 2025, according to the ISMA.
The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast an ‘above-normal’ southwest monsoon for 2025, which is crucial for sugarcane cultivation.
