Kathmandu: Members of the National Assembly have asked the government to reverse its decision to stop the subsidy given to sugarcane farmers, reported The Rising Nepal.
Speaking at today’s meeting, they expressed disappointment with the government’s plan to remove the production subsidy of Rs 70 per quintal starting next fiscal year. The lawmakers said farmers would face serious problems if the subsidy, which has been provided for the last 30 years, is stopped.
Dr Beduram Bhusal said removing the subsidy would mean the government is turning its back on farmers. Gopi Bahadur Sarki Achhami said stopping the subsidy would discourage farmers, especially in districts like Rautahat, Sarlahi, and Mahottari. Mrigendra Kumar Singh Yadav also asked the government to reconsider the decision.
During the session, Yadav also urged the government to take steps to ensure the safety of Nepalis living in Israel and Iran and to bring them back home as the war between the two countries continues.
