Despite supply chain disruptions caused by massive landslides in Assam’s hill region, Tripura currently has an adequate stock of essential commodities like rice, wheat, and sugar, an official confirmed on Thursday.
According to the official, currently, Tripura has a stock of rice for 86 days, wheat for 50 days, pulse for 50 days, sugar for 22 days and salt for 30 days, reported PTI.
However, fuel reserves are limited and can only meet the state’s demand for four to five days.
“We are closely monitoring food and fuel stock levels daily following the disruption caused by landslides that damaged railway tracks in the Lumding-Badarpur section of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR),” said Sumit Lodh, Director of Food & Civil Supplies, in a statement to PTI.
He added that a review meeting was held on Wednesday, chaired by Special Secretary Debapriya Bardhan, with representatives from the Food Corporation of India (FCI), Railways, and Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) to assess the situation.
“At present, there is no shortage of items under the public distribution system (PDS),” Lodh reiterated, emphasizing that the availability of essential commodities remains stable despite the supply chain issues. “Fuel stock, however, remains low and is sufficient only for four to five days.”
Lodh noted that the NFR is working urgently to remove debris and restore railway services, with operations expected to resume by June 29.
“If connectivity is restored by June 29, the supply of both food and fuel will continue without issue. However, any further delay could pose a challenge, especially for fuel availability,” he cautioned.
The state government is coordinating with FCI, IOCL, and the NFR to manage the situation effectively.
Train services in the Lumding-Badarpur section have been suspended since June 23 due to severe landslides, affecting rail connectivity to Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, and parts of the Barak Valley.
