India’s ethanol blending programme has played a key role in reducing the country’s reliance on crude oil imports while significantly enhancing farmers’ earnings, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Sunday.
According to the minister, more than Rs 1.18 lakh crore has been paid to farmers over the past 11 years under the programme, which encourages the production and use of ethanol as a cleaner alternative fuel.
He noted that the initiative has also helped India save around Rs 1.36 lakh crore in foreign exchange by displacing crude oil imports. In total, ethanol has replaced approximately 232 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil during this period, leading to a reduction of nearly 698 lakh metric tonnes in carbon emissions, Puri shared on social media platform X.

“Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ethanol is emerging as a key driver of New India’s growth,” the minister wrote, adding, “Every drop of ethanol carries the pride and prosperity of our farmers.”
Puri also highlighted that India has achieved its 20% ethanol blending target ahead of schedule.
The minister also credited the government’s Digital India push and technology-driven initiatives for modernising the country’s fuel infrastructure. In a post on Saturday, he stated that India’s oil and gas sector has seen a major transformation over the last 11 years under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, becoming smarter and more efficient through the integration of digital tools.
