Bihar announces Rs 49 crore to boost sugarcane sector

Patna: The Bihar government has given the green light to a investment aimed at boosting the state’s sugarcane sector. In a cabinet decision dated July 1, 2025, the state approved a budget of Rs 49 crore for the implementation of the Sugarcane Development Programme for the financial year 2025-26.

The scheme is expected to benefit thousands of sugarcane farmers and skilled workers connected to the sector. It focuses on modernising farming techniques, promoting high-yield sugarcane varieties.

Recently, the Sugarcane Industry Minister, Krishnanandan Paswan, launched an online portal on for receiving applications under the ‘Sugarcane Mechanisation Scheme’. The scheme, backed by a subsidy outlay of Rs 10 crore for the 2025–26 financial year, aims to cut cultivation costs and enhance farmers’ income. With the help of modern agricultural machinery, farmers will be able to plant cane seeds at scientifically recommended distances. The scheme also encourages the use of advanced tools to control pests, diseases, and weeds.
