Over 62,000 kg of sugar damaged at Maheshpur customs warehouse near Indo-Nepal border

Maharajganj (Nepal): Around 62,000 kilograms of sugar stored for years without supervision at the Maheshpur Customs warehouse near the Indo-Nepal border has gone to waste. The decayed stock, valued at approximately Rs 40 lakh, was destroyed using an excavator and dumped into the Jharhi River.

According to customs officials, the sugar had been stored at the warehouse for several years without any protective measures, leading to its deterioration. Maheshpur Customs Chief Vikas Upadhyay confirmed the damaged, stating that the shelf life of the stored sugar had long expired, necessitating its disposal.

However, experts have raised questions about the handling of the stock, pointing out that sugar does not typically spoil under normal conditions. They argue that with timely inspection and proper management, the wastage could have been prevented.

The incident highlights concerns over storage practices and accountability at customs facilities handling valuable and consumable goods.
