ESY 2024–25: 749 crore liters of ethanol blended during Nov 24–July 25

India is steadily advancing in the ethanol sector, with consistent year-on-year growth in production, blending levels, and overall capacity. This progress is reshaping the nation’s energy landscape while also contributing to economic development and promoting sustainable growth in rural areas.

During the current Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2024–25, ethanol blending in petrol reached 19.9% in July 2025. The cumulative average blending rate from November 2024 to July 2025 stood at 19.1%, according to the Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell (PPAC) data.

In July 2025 alone, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) received 85.3 crore liters of ethanol under the EBP Programme. This brought the cumulative ethanol offtake by OMCs to 722.7 crore liters over the November–July period.

Official data indicates that a total of 87.9 crore liters of ethanol was blended into petrol in July 2025, pushing the cumulative ethanol blending volume to 749 crore liters from November 2024 to July 2025.

The government has a target of achieving 20% ethanol blending in petrol by ESY 2025-26. Since the inception of the EBP Programme, ethanol blending has increased from 38 crore litres in the ESY 2013-14 to over 707.4 crore litres in ESY 2023-24. This expansion helped India achieve an average ethanol blending rate of 14.6% during ESY 2023–24.

As of June 30, 2025, India’s annual ethanol production capacity stands at 1,822 crore litres, supported by 499 distilleries during the Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2024–25, according to the government data.

Maharashtra leads in ethanol production capacity with 396 crore litres, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 331 crore litres and Karnataka with 270 crore litres.
