Islamabad: The Pakistan government has decided to import 85,000 metric tons of sugar to meet domestic demand and stabilize prices, the Ministry of Food Security announced on Friday, reports The Nation.
According to the ministry, Letters of Credit (LCs) have been opened through SOCAR for the imports, with disbursements made via relevant banks. The shipments will arrive in phases under a trade agreement signed with SOCAR, with the first consignment expected to reach Pakistan’s ports in the coming weeks.
Officials said the move aims to boost sugar reserves, prevent shortages, and check sudden price fluctuations. The imported sugar will be supplied to the public at concessional rates in the open market.
