Fiji: Government announces $15 per tonne assistance for farmers after Rarawai mill fire

The government has announced financial support for sugarcane farmers affected by the recent fire at the Rarawai Sugar Mill in Ba, offering $15 per tonne for cane diverted to Lautoka, reports The Fiji Times.

Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry Charan Jeath Singh confirmed the assistance during a visit to the damaged mill with Acting Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Biman Prasad. The visit was aimed at assessing the damage and reassuring farmers, mill workers, and lorry drivers of the government’s commitment to ongoing operations.

Despite the setback, Singh said the harvest would be completed. “We understand the challenges farmers are facing. No cane will be left unharvested,” he said.

With Rarawai out of action, the Lautoka Sugar Mill will now process cane from Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki. Singh assured that the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) and the government will provide full support for the logistical shift.

The $15 per tonne compensation is designed to offset higher transport costs caused by the diversion. Around 400,000 tonnes of cane remain to be harvested in the Rarawai and Lautoka mill areas.

Singh also guaranteed job security for FSC employees. “All FSC staff will keep their jobs,” he said.

The Ministry is working with stakeholders to ensure smooth harvesting and protect the livelihoods of those dependent on the sugar industry.
