Amid excessive rainfall in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat, the sugar industry has urged the government to extend the September 2025 sugar release quota.
In a letter to the Joint Secretary (Sugar), Department of Food and Public Distribution, the West Indian Sugar Mills Association stated that due to excessive, heavy and incessant rains in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat, sugar lifting by merchants and movement of sugar transportation had been badly hit.
The letter also highlighted extensive crop damage, including to sugarcane and other crops.
“On this background, we sugar industry urge you to kindly extend September 2025 Sugar release quota up to 15th of October, 2025 and oblige,” the association said in its appeal.
On August 28, the Food Ministry allocated a monthly sugar quota of 23.5 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) for September 2025, the same as the quota for September 2024.
For October 2025, the Ministry has allocated a quota of 24 LMT.
The overall quota for the 2023–24 season (from October 2023 to September 2024) was 291.50 LMT, whereas for the 2024–25 season (from October 2024 to September 2025), the sugar quota stands at 275.50 LMT.
Earlier on Sunday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis held a detailed review of the flood situation in Jalna and Latur districts, directing the administration to intensify relief and rescue operations while ensuring the safety of citizens amid continuing heavy rainfall in the Marathwada region, the Chief Minister’s office said in a statement.
