Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, has praised India for its continued support in helping strengthen the country’s sugar industry, reported FBC News.
Gavoka said that training local workers is key to improving productivity, adopting modern farming techniques, and raising industry standards. He noted that India has played a crucial role in this effort by sending experts under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program to the Fiji Sugar Corporation, where they have provided technical guidance and conducted capacity-building initiatives.
He expressed optimism that these programs would continue to benefit farmers and help ensure the long-term sustainability and growth of Fiji’s sugar industry. Gavoka urged that “specialized training be arranged for Fijian sugar professionals to help introduce modern methods and strengthen one of the nation’s oldest and most important industries.”
He also underlined the need for the wider agricultural sector to be equipped with modern tools and technology to boost output and efficiency.
Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, emphasized the value of providing young people with training that enhances their education and employment prospects.
He said that the “Declaration of Intent on Migration and Mobility Partnership” between the two nations opens new pathways for education, jobs, and cultural exchange. Mehta noted that these initiatives reflect India’s ongoing commitment to developing Fiji’s human capital, sharing knowledge, and fostering a future based on opportunity and mutual respect.
He added that India remains committed to offering technical training and expertise to help Fijian youth play a stronger role in key sectors of the country’s economy.
