Sugarcane farmers intensify their protest in Haveri and Mudhol for second day

Haveri/Mudhol: Farmers in Haveri and Mudhol continued their protests for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, demanding that the government ensure fair and uniform prices for sugarcane, reports Deccan Herald.

In Haveri, farmers staged an overnight sit-in, insisting that mills pay the officially fixed rate of ₹3,300 per tonne. They said that the three sugar factories in the district were offering rates between ₹2,711 and ₹2,740 per tonne, which they refused to accept. “We will not back down until the price is fixed at ₹3,300 per tonne,” the farmers declared.

Deputy Commissioner Vijay Mahantesh met the protesters and urged them to withdraw their agitation, but the farmers stood firm. Bhuvaneshwar Shidlapur, district president of the State Sugarcane Growers’ Association, said, “We will continue our protest until the farmers of Haveri receive the same price as those in Belagavi.”

Meanwhile, in Mudhol, Bagalkot district, farmers continued their demand for ₹3,500 per tonne of sugarcane. Kodihalli Chandrashekhar, president of the Hasiru Sene state unit, said the protest would go on until the government fixed a fair price for sugarcane. He reminded that in 2013, the government had announced a ₹350 per tonne subsidy and urged it to take a similar step now.
