A delegation from the People’s Republic of China has presented a detailed proposal for Fiji’s planned new sugar mill in the western region. While the government has confirmed its commitment to building the mill, it has not yet announced the exact site, reports The Fiji Times.
The visiting team represented the China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CMC), a major state-owned enterprise involved in industrial and agricultural projects. The group outlined early mill designs, suggested technology improvements and explained the funding model being examined.
The presentation was held at the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) Training Centre in Lautoka.
Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry Charan Jeath Singh attended the briefing, along with Member of Parliament Biman Prasad, FSC Board Chair Nitya Reddy, FSC board members and Permanent Secretary Dr Vinesh Kumar.
The Ministry of Sugar will review the proposal further as discussions between Fiji and China continue on modernising the mill and strengthening the long-term future of the sugar industry.
