The Labasa sugar mill’s crushing season has been pushed to next Friday after heavy rainfall in recent days disrupted sugarcane harvesting and the transportation of cane to the mill, reports Fijivillage.
Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) Chairman Nitya Reddy said reinstatement trials at the Rarawai Mill, which was affected by fire, are progressing well. He said FSC is hopeful that crushing at the mill can begin by early December, provided no unexpected technical or mechanical problems arise.
Reddy urged growers supplying cane to the Labasa mill to take full advantage of the extended crushing period. He said FSC’s field teams will closely monitor harvesting activities and cane deliveries throughout the week. Weather conditions will also be assessed daily, and the deadline may be adjusted if needed.
FSC has assured farmers, harvesting gangs, and transport operators that it will provide full cooperation and support to ensure all harvestable cane is cut and delivered within the extended timeframe.
Reddy also called on growers supplying cane to Viti Levu mills—covering areas from Rakiraki to Sigatoka—to remain patient as preparations continue. He appealed to all farmers to reduce cane burning and maintain steady work in the fields.
The Corporation said it is ready to assist wherever necessary but noted that the main effort must come from growers to ensure a successful crushing season. Further updates regarding the Lautoka and Rarawai mills are expected next week.
