Thousands of sugarcane farmers across the district have received a financial boost, as five local sugar mills have cleared dues totaling ₹229 crore for the current season, reported Amar Ujala.
The district is a hub for sugar production, with sugarcane cultivated over approximately 1.55 lakh hectares. The sector supports the livelihoods of nearly two lakh farmers, supplying cane to six mills.
For the 2025-26 season, operations commenced in late October and early November. According to departmental data, five of the six mills have cleared payments for cane procured up to November 22, bringing relief to the farming community.
Farmers are also seeing slightly higher returns this year, with the State Government fixing the State Advisory Price (SAP) at Rs. 400 per quintal for the early (Agaiti) variety and Rs. 390 per quintal for the general variety.
The breakdown of payments released so far is as follows:
-
Daurala: Rs. 87.99 crore
-
Mawana: Rs. 75.83 crore
-
Nanglamal: Rs. 36.10 crore
-
Mohiuddinpur: Rs.15.76 crore
-
Sakhoti: Rs. 13.30 crore
District officials have acknowledged the disparity in performance. B.K. Patel, the District Cane Officer, stated, “Strict instructions have been given to all sugar mills to ensure timely payments to farmers. In the Meerut district, only Kinauni Sugar Mill is lagging behind. Notices have already been issued to them to expedite the process.”
