Bihar: Chief Secretary seeks detailed report on closed and new sugar mills

Bihar’s Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit has asked the Sugarcane Industries Department to submit a detailed report regarding the reopening of defunct sugar mills and the establishment of new ones in the state. On Monday, a meeting of the high-level committee formed for setting up new sugar mills and reviving old, closed mills was held under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary, reported Live Hindusthan.

In the meeting, Sugarcane Industries Department Principal Secretary Narmadeshwar Lal gave a comprehensive presentation. He briefed the committee on the current status and relevant information of all operational and non-operational sugar mills in Bihar. Following the presentation, the Chief Secretary instructed that before the next meeting, the department must thoroughly examine all necessary documents related to both closed mills and proposed new mills.

This high-level committee has been constituted in compliance with an important decision taken in the previous cabinet meeting to promote the sugarcane industry in the state. The committee’s primary objective is to formulate policies and an action plan for setting up new sugar mills and reviving closed ones, thereby increasing farmers’ income and creating more employment opportunities in the state.

The meeting was attended by Sugarcane Commissioner Anil Kumar Jha, Industries Department Secretary Kundan Kumar, Director Mukul Kumar Gupta, and Cooperation Department Secretary Dharmendra Singh. The high-level committee, chaired by the Chief Secretary, includes Additional Chief Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, or Secretaries from the Finance, Industries, Cooperation, Sugarcane Industries, and Agriculture Departments. In addition, national and international experts in the sector may be invited or nominated to the committee as required.
