Indian Federation of Green Energy signs MoU with Global Ethanol Association to advance ethanol as sustainable marine fuel

The Indian Federation of Green Energy (IFGE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Global Ethanol Association (GEA) to promote the adoption of ethanol as a sustainable green fuel, with a primary focus on the marine sector, including its applications in automobiles and civil aviation.

The MoU was formally signed by Sanjay Ganjoo, Director General of IFGE, and Morten Jacobsen, Secretary General of GEA, marking a significant step toward strengthening international cooperation in the bioenergy and green fuels domain—particularly in advancing low-carbon solutions for maritime transportation.

Through this strategic partnership, IFGE and GEA aim to accelerate the deployment of ethanol as a viable marine fuel, supporting global decarbonization efforts in shipping while fostering innovation, policy advocacy, and market development. The collaboration will also promote ethanol-based solutions across road transport and aviation to reduce carbon emissions and advance the green and bioenergy transition. Under the agreement, GEA will share its global expertise on ethanol and its applications in sustainable marine fuels, including access to research publications, technical reports, and international best practices. The two organizations will collaborate on joint promotional initiatives and advocacy efforts to highlight ethanol’s potential as a clean, scalable, and commercially viable fuel for the maritime sector and beyond.

Commenting on the MoU, Atul Mulay, Chairman of the IFGE BioEnergy Committee and President of Praj Industries, said that the collaboration represents an important step toward building international market linkages for ethanol, especially in emerging applications such as marine fuels. He added that the partnership would help open new opportunities and global markets for IFGE members and Indian companies operating across the ethanol value chain.

Morten Jacobsen, Secretary General of GEA, emphasized that this partnership marks a pivotal moment in advancing global decarbonization. He stated that GEA is proud to support India’s dynamic green energy sector and assist IFGE and its members in unlocking emerging market opportunities for Indian-produced sustainable fuels such as ethanol. Mr. Jacobsen noted that this collaboration will not only strengthen international linkages but also accelerate the transition toward cleaner energy solutions across maritime transport, civil aviation, and road mobility worldwide. He further highlighted that GEA’s Founding Members share this vision and are committed to contributing their expertise and resources to position ethanol as a cornerstone of a sustainable, low-carbon future for global transportation and beyond.

As part of the partnership, IFGE will actively engage with GEA and explore opportunities, and evaluate feasibility for development of market for ethanol-based green energy solutions in India and internationally. IFGE and GEA will jointly organize knowledge-sharing initiatives—including workshops, seminars, and stakeholder interactions—to engage policymakers, industry leaders, ship owners, ports, fuel suppliers, and other key stakeholders in advancing the ethanol-based marine fuel ecosystem.
