Haryana govt to form committee to boost financial health of sugar mills

Rohtak: With the aim of making cooperative sugar mills in the state financially viable, the government will set up a state-level coordination committee comprising administrative officials and technical specialists, reports The Tribune.

This was stated by Cooperation and Tourism Minister Dr Arvind Sharma during a surprise inspection of the Rohtak Cooperative Sugar Mill at Bhali-Anandpur village on Friday.

Explaining the purpose of the panel, Sharma said the committee would visit cooperative sugar mills across the state and study local conditions and other relevant aspects before submitting recommendations to strengthen their finances. He added that the team would also flag any irregularities noticed during inspections, enabling action to be taken against those found responsible.

During the visit, the minister reviewed the status of the ongoing crushing season after receiving a briefing from the mill’s Managing Director, Shweta Suhag, and her team. He was told that since the season began on December 9, the mill has crushed 3.53 lakh quintals of sugarcane against a target of 30 lakh quintals.

Sharma stressed the need to address machine breakdowns promptly during the crushing season and directed officials to ensure round-the-clock availability of technical staff so that operations run without disruption.

Later in the day, the minister carried out a surprise inspection of the District Jail at Sunariya village. He reviewed security arrangements with jail authorities and asked them to improve basic facilities for inmates and prisoners, while also ensuring that the quality of food served meets required standards.
