2025–26 season: Sugar production in Maharashtra touches 492 lakh quintals

Sugarcane crushing for Maharashtra’s 2025–26 season has picked up pace, with operations expanding steadily across the state. As per the latest data from the Sugar Commissionerate, 195 sugar mills started sugarcane crushing as of January 01, 2026.

So far, mills in the state have crushed 562.1 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of sugarcane, producing 492 lakh quintals of sugar. The average sugar recovery rate currently stands at 8.75%.

Of the 195 mills that are actively crushing, 97 belong to the cooperative sector and 98 are privately owned. The Kolhapur division continues to outperform other regions in both sugar output and recovery rates.

Kolhapur: A total of 37 mills are operational, crushing 122.61 LMT of cane and achieving the state’s highest recovery rate of 10.32%. The division has produced 126.54 lakh quintals of sugar.

Pune: The Pune division has 30 operational mills. They have crushed 133.39 LMT of cane with a recovery rate of 9.02%, resulting in 120.32 lakh quintals of sugar.

Solapur: Despite having the largest number of active mills at 45, Solapur has crushed 122.82 LMT of cane, recording a recovery rate of 7.85%.

By this date in the previous season, 197 mills had begun operations, crushing 369.39 LMT of cane with a recovery rate of 8.58%.
