Sugar production in Maharashtra reaches 562.97 lakh quintals; Kolhapur leads in recovery rate

Sugarcane crushing for Maharashtra’s 2025–26 season is well underway, with operations steadily picking up across the state. According to the latest figures from the Sugar Commissionerate, 197 sugar mills commenced crushing as of January 8, 2026.

So far, these mills have crushed 632.92 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of sugarcane, yielding 562.97 lakh quintals of sugar. The average sugar recovery rate currently stands at 8.89%.

Among the 197 operational mills, 98 are part of the cooperative sector, while 99 are privately owned. The Kolhapur division continues to lead in both sugar output and recovery rates.

Kolhapur: All 37 mills in the division are operational, crushing 137.73 LMT of cane and achieving the state’s highest recovery rate of 10.47%, producing 144.25 lakh quintals of sugar.

Pune: The Pune division has 30 mills in operation, which have crushed 146.95 LMT of cane at a recovery rate of 9.16%, resulting in 134.55 lakh quintals of sugar.

Solapur: With the largest number of active mills at 46, Solapur has crushed 138.05 LMT of cane, recording a recovery rate of 8%.

By the same date in the previous season, 199 mills had begun operations, crushing 434.14 LMT of cane with an average recovery rate of 8.71%.
