Statewide training drive launched to promote scientific sugarcane farming

Shahjahanpur: The Sugarcane Research Council has launched a statewide training campaign to make sugarcane cultivation more profitable, sustainable and science-based. Under the initiative, a roadmap has been prepared to connect around 5,000 farmers from all sugarcane-growing districts of the state with modern farming practices, with the aim of increasing production and improving farm income, reports Live Hindustan.

In the first phase of the programme, 100 progressive sugarcane farmers from Shahjahanpur and Hardoi districts were given one-day training. During the programme, farmers were introduced to new and improved sugarcane varieties, the importance of soil testing, balanced use of fertilisers and nutrients, improved crop management practices, intercropping with spring-planted sugarcane and the single-bud planting technique.

The training also focused on the identification of major sugarcane diseases and pests, along with effective measures for their control.

At the inauguration, District Cane Officer Jitendra Mishra said there was a need to move away from traditional methods and adopt scientific techniques in sugarcane farming. He urged farmers to implement the practices shared during the training to reduce costs and increase productivity.

Extension officer Dr Sanjeev Pathak said the training programme would be conducted in phases across other sugarcane-growing districts of the state, so that more farmers could benefit from modern agricultural practices.
