Patna: The Bihar government will reopen all closed sugar mills in the state in a phased manner as part of its plan to boost industrial growth and create jobs, said deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.
There are nine closed sugar mills in the state, he said.
He was speaking during the fifth day of Chief Minister Nitish KumarтАЩs Samriddhi Yatra in Saran district.
He said the governmentтАЩs priority is to create employment opportunities within Bihar. To achieve this, he said industries are being actively promoted and the state has put in place a strong industrial policy.
As of 2025, Bihar has 18 sugar mills that are no longer operational, including 15 that were previously run by the Bihar State Sugar Corporation. In November 2025, the NDA government led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar cleared a proposal to restart nine of these closed mills and establish 25 new sugar mills across the state. A senior-level committee chaired by the chief secretary was set up in December to oversee and track the progress of the plan.
Of the nine sugar mills identified for revival, seven are in the public sector. These include Raiyam in Darbhanga, Sakri in Madhubani, the Samastipur unit, Motipur in Muzaffarpur, Marhaura in Saran, Barachakia in East Champaran, and Chanpatia in West Champaran. The remaining two mills, located in Motihari and Sasamusa in Gopalganj, are in the private sector.
