No plans for investment in other countries: Al Khaleej Sugar MD

Al Khaleej Sugar’s refinery in the United Arab Emirates is currently running at about 70% of its capacity, Managing Director Jamal al-Ghurair said on Tuesday at the Dubai Sugar Conference. He also said that the company has no plans at present to invest in refineries outside the country, reported Reuters.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the conference, al-Ghurair said the refinery produced 1.5 million metric tons of sugar in 2025.

Al Khaleej Sugar operates the world’s largest port-based sugar refinery. According to al-Ghurair, the company exports to roughly 30 countries and meets around 70% of the UAE’s domestic sugar demand. The UAE consumes about 250,000 tons of sugar annually.

Al-Ghurair also said he expects the global sugar market to move into surplus during the 2026-27 season.
