New Delhi: The sugarcane crushing season in India is moving into its closing phase, with 80 sugar mills shutting operations so far, while 454 mills continue crushing, according to figures released by the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Ltd (NFCSF).
A total of 534 mills participated in crushing during the current 2025–26 season, slightly higher than the 532 mills that operated during the same period last year. The gradual closure of mills signals the approach of the season’s end, even as production remains higher than last year.
Till February 14, mills across the country have crushed 2,419.59 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of sugarcane, compared with 2,176.97 LMT crushed during the corresponding period of the previous season.
Industry officials said the higher cane availability and early start to the season helped mills maintain operations for a longer period, contributing to increased sugar output despite the steady pace of closures.
