In a move to boost access to cleaner fuel in villages, the Bihar government has decided to relax norms for setting up biodiesel pumps across rural areas, according to Patna Press.
Officials from the Rural Works Department said the state is preparing to allow biofuel retail outlets in every village. The initiative aims to improve access to cleaner fuel in rural regions, where availability has been limited. Previously, setting up such pumps was difficult due to unclear procedures, especially regarding the use of government land for connecting roads. Rules framed in 2018 did not clearly outline how biofuel stations could be approved.
To address this, the state has formed a committee headed by the Chief Engineer to establish a clear approval process for village biodiesel pumps. The committee will recommend rules similar to those applied to petrol pumps, after which the government will issue updated guidelines.
Officials added that biodiesel is produced from sources such as vegetable oils, animal fats, and organic waste, generating fewer emissions than conventional diesel. The initiative is expected to promote cleaner fuel use and create employment opportunities in rural areas.
