Punjab: Farmers launch agitation to save Sheron sugar mill

Amritsar: Several farmers’ organisations affiliated with the Sanyukta Kisan Morcha on Monday launched a ‘pakka morcha’ at the cooperative sugar mill in Sheron, pressing for the revival of the unit, The Tribune reported.

The protest began at the mill premises, with farmers stating that the agitation would continue until the state government withdraws its decision to allot the mill’s land to other government institutions.

Farmer leader Nachhattar Singh said the sit-in would not be called off unless the letter regarding the transfer of the land is revoked.

A number of farmer leaders and supporters gathered at the site. Those who addressed the protesters included Mahavir Singh Gill, Gurpreet Singh, Puran Singh Marimegha, Amolak Singh and Resham Singh Failoke. They said farmer organisations had been urging the authorities for a long time to restart the sugar mill.

According to the leaders, reopening the mill would support farmers in the region and generate employment for many local residents.

The Punjab Government issued a letter in November 2025 allocating nearly 100 acres of the mill’s land to various government institutions.
