Maharashtra: 60 mills closed, output reaches 922.95 lakh quintals

Kolhapur: The sugar season in Maharashtra is nearing its conclusion, with 60 mills having closed their crushing operations. According to data from the State Sugar Commissioner’s office, total sugar production in the state stood at 922.95 lakh quintals as of February 23.

The latest crushing report shows that 210 sugar mills participated in the 2025–26 season, including 103 cooperative mills and 107 private mills. These mills have crushed 980.85 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of sugarcane and produced 922.95 lakh quintals of sugar, achieving an average recovery rate of 9.41 per cent.

The Kolhapur division continues to lead the state in both sugar production and recovery rate.

In Kolhapur division, all 39 mills are operational. They have crushed 206.19 LMT of cane and recorded the state’s highest recovery rate of 10.96 per cent, producing 225.93 lakh quintals of sugar.

In Pune division, 32 mills are in operation. They have crushed 209.11 LMT of cane at a recovery rate of 9.75 per cent, resulting in 203.79 lakh quintals of sugar.

Solapur division, which has the highest number of operational mills at 49, has crushed 211.34 LMT of cane and recorded a recovery rate of 8.54 per cent.

During the same period last season, 199 mills had crushed 793.56 LMT of sugarcane and produced 739.94 lakh quintals of sugar, with an average recovery rate of 9.32 per cent.
