Panaji: The Goa government has approved plans to set up a plant at Headland Sada in Mormugao to produce compressed biogas (CBG) from municipal solid waste. The proposed unit will handle 25 tonnes of waste per day and is estimated to cost Rs 12 crore, The Times of India reported.
The Goa Waste Management Corporation said the project is aimed at encouraging renewable energy generation and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills. By treating segregated wet waste on a daily basis, the plant is expected to cut landfill use and make use of by-products such as compost. Officials said the initiative will show that waste management can be run in a sustainable manner while creating useful products from garbage.
The facility will come up at the Headland Sada waste site under the Mormugao Municipal Council and will be developed through a public-private partnership. A senior official said the arrangement will ensure that the plant is set up without any financial burden on the state government. If the model proves successful, similar projects could be introduced in other parts of Goa.
At present, Goa has two waste treatment plants at Saligao and Cacora, both of which generate electricity. The proposed Headland Sada unit, however, will produce compressed biogas.
In a related development, six companies have submitted bids to set up a 100-tonne-per-day solid waste management plant at Bainguinim, despite earlier controversy over the project. The companies are Hyderabad Integrated MSW Ltd, Hindustan Waste Treatment Pvt Ltd, 3R Management Ltd, Srinivas Waste Management Services Pvt Ltd, Organic Recycling Systems Pvt Ltd and HNB Engineers Pvt Ltd.
Officials said the submitted documents are under review and eligible bidders will be invited to take part in the next stage of the selection process.
