Ukrainian firm launches ‘green’ sugar made with biomethane

Ukrainian agribusiness firm Hals Agro has started producing certified eco-friendly sugar using biomethane as fuel at its sugar plant, Komersant reported.

The development was reported by industry publication Latifundist, quoting the company’s director Serhiy Kravchuk, and later carried by Komersant Ukrainian.

According to Kravchuk, the company supplied biomethane to its sugar factory and obtained certification confirming that the sugar was produced using renewable energy. He said the product qualifies as “green” sugar.

Biomethane is a renewable alternative to natural gas. It is produced by processing organic materials through fermentation, rather than being extracted from underground reserves. The company said using biomethane lowers the carbon emissions linked to sugar production and ensures compliance with European Union climate standards.

Kravchuk added that many European producers still rely heavily on natural gas for sugar manufacturing. He said EU countries are not yet fully prepared to adopt biomethane widely in sugar production because there is no unified biomethane register across the bloc. In his view, this makes it harder to expand such projects across the market.

In terms of trade, Ukraine exported 463,700 tonnes of sugar worth $222 million in 2025. However, European sugar prices fell to a three-year low in the autumn of 2025 due to high stock levels and increased supplies from Ukraine.

Following the price decline, sugar and sugar beet producers in Europe urged EU authorities to limit imports of raw sugar, including shipments from Ukraine.
