The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji continues to play an important role in strengthening Fiji’s sugar industry and supporting farmers, Agriculture Minister Tomasi Tunabuna said during a visit to the institute this week, FBC News reported.
Tunabuna toured the institute’s facilities in Drasa, Lautoka, where he met staff and reviewed ongoing research and field programmes. He commended the team for their contribution to research, innovation and technical assistance aimed at improving cane production and farmer incomes.
Established in 2006, the institute is involved in developing improved sugarcane varieties, conducting soil and leaf testing, analysing cane quality and screening crops for pests and diseases. It also promotes crop diversification, produces disease-free seedcane and manages projects supported by development partners.
During the visit, the minister inspected laboratories, research plots and seedcane facilities, and held discussions with staff on current initiatives. He encouraged continued dedication to research and practical solutions that benefit growers.
Tunabuna reaffirmed the government’s support for science-based approaches to ensure steady and sustainable growth in the country’s sugar sector.
