Gopalganj: Revival of the closed Sasamusa sugar mill is gaining momentum as officials and potential investors carried out an inspection of the facility on Tuesday, Jagran reported.
Representatives of Tirhut Industries and a Maharashtra-based private firm, Two Sigma, visited the mill premises to assess the condition of the property and explore the possibility of resuming operations. Officials from the state sugarcane industry department and local administration were also present during the inspection.
The visit followed a meeting held a day earlier in Patna between senior government officials and representatives of the investor company to discuss the revival of the mill.
After the meeting, Tirhut Industries chairman Harendra Bajpai, along with company representatives Milind Gaikwad and Kiran Lokhande, arrived at Sasamusa to inspect the facility. They were joined by sugarcane industry commissioner J. P. N. Singh and local administrative officials.
During the visit, the team examined the land available within the mill premises and gathered details about surrounding land that could be used for future expansion. The delegation also inspected various sections of the mill, including old machinery, buildings and other structures.
Officials said the team also assessed the potential for setting up other agriculture-based industries within the mill premises.
Following the inspection, company representatives and officials held discussions at the site on possible investment, technical arrangements and the future plan for restarting the mill.
Bajpai said Tirhut Industries, along with the Maharashtra-based firm, is seriously considering the proposal to restart the Sasamusa sugar mill. He said the inspection was carried out after positive discussions with government officials and further steps would be taken soon.
He added that the project may not be limited to sugar production. The company is also examining the possibility of producing ethanol and other agriculture-based products at the site.
According to the preliminary plan, if the process moves forward smoothly, the mill could begin operations from the 2026–27 season. The revival is expected to benefit thousands of sugarcane farmers in nearby areas and create new employment opportunities.
Sugarcane industry commissioner J. P. N. Singh said the Bihar government is committed to reopening closed sugar mills in the state. A committee headed by the chief secretary has been formed to take steps in this direction following the chief minister’s instructions.
He said the government is working on both setting up new sugar mills and reviving closed ones, and the Sasamusa unit is among the projects under consideration.
Earlier, Karnataka-based sugar producer Nirani Group had also shown interest in operating the mill. Representatives of the company inspected the facility on February 27 along with senior officials.
At that time, the company’s chairman Murugan Nirani had indicated that additional land could be arranged if required for restarting the mill.
With fresh inspections now taking place, local farmers and residents are hopeful that the long-closed Sasamusa sugar mill may soon resume operations.
