Rain forecast expected to benefit Fiji’s sugarcane regions

Favourable rainfall is forecast for sugarcane-growing regions in Fiji over the next few months, according to the latest seasonal outlook from the Fiji Meteorological Service, Fiji Times reported.

The forecast shows that in March 2026 there is a 75 percent chance that areas from Olosara to Penang will receive about 250–300 mm of rain. Regions such as Meigunyah, Natova, Mota and Dobuilevu, along with much of the sugarcane belt in Vanua Levu, could receive higher rainfall of around 300–400 mm.

For April 2026, the outlook indicates a 75 percent probability of rainfall between 100–150 mm from Olosara to Tavua. Areas around Penang may receive 150–200 mm, while Dobuilevu and the sugarcane belt in Vanua Levu could get 200–250 mm.

Rainfall is expected to decline in parts of the Western Division in May 2026. The forecast suggests that regions including Lomawai, Malolo, Nadi, Lautoka, Lovu and Drasa may receive only 0–25 mm of rain.

Other cane-growing areas such as Olosara, Cuvu, Meigunyah, Natova and Tavua could receive between 25–50 mm. Penang and parts of Vanua Levu may record 50–100 mm, while Dobuilevu is likely to receive the highest rainfall for the month at 100–150 mm.

Looking at the wider period from April to June 2026, the outlook suggests a 75 percent chance of rainfall between 200–300 mm from Olosara to Tagitagi. Areas including Rarawai, Koronubu, Navatu, Vatukoula, Tavua and Penang may receive 300–400 mm. Dobuilevu and most sugarcane-growing areas in Vanua Levu could get 400–500 mm of rain.

Climate experts said a weak La Niña event is currently in place but is expected to shift towards ENSO-neutral conditions from March. However, its impact may continue for several months due to delayed changes in the atmosphere.

Fiji also remains in its wet and tropical cyclone season, and forecasts suggest the country could experience one to two tropical cyclones, including the possibility of one severe system reaching Category 3 to 5 intensity.
