Punjab: Farmers seek immediate release of cane dues

Bhogpur: Sugarcane farmers in Punjab have raised concerns over pending payments, urging the state government to release outstanding dues of Rs 68.50 per quintal without delay, Jagran reported.

Leaders of the Doaba Kisan Sangharsh Committee, including Balwinder Singh Malli Nangal and Harvinder Pal Singh Dalli, said delayed payments are affecting farmers’ finances and discouraging them from continuing sugarcane cultivation.

They noted that sugarcane remains a major crop in the Doaba and Majha regions, but current policies are forcing farmers to reconsider its viability. The leaders warned that if timely payments and supportive measures are not ensured, cane cultivation in these regions could decline in the coming years.

Drawing parallels with the Malwa region, where certain crops and related industries have seen a downturn, they cautioned that a similar situation could arise for sugarcane and sugar mills.

The leaders said that delays in payments are making it difficult for farmers to invest in the next crop cycle, leading to financial strain and a gradual reduction in acreage under sugarcane.

They also pointed out that cooperative sugar mills may face challenges in clearing payments if dues remain pending, as part of the amount is held back.

Calling for immediate action, the farmers’ representatives urged the government to formulate a clear policy to support both growers and mills. They also demanded that the sugarcane price for the next season be fixed at ₹500 per quintal to encourage cultivation and sustain the sector.
